Loi Krathong

Wouldn’t it be awesome if we could dump all our negative feelings into a little boat and sail it away? That’s what Loi Krathong festival is for. Celebrated on a full moon in November, Loi Krathong is a festival observed annually in Thailand and in some parts of Laos and Burma.

Loi Krathong is translated as “float a krathong”. The traditional “krathong” is a small circular hand-made boat decorated with banana leaves, flowers, candles, and incense sticks. Sometimes, money is placed inside the krathong as a token for the river spirits.  People would go to a water canal, a pond, or a lake to float their krathong. Before people place their krathong into the water, they would pray and cast all their ill-feelings and any negative thoughts into the little ornament boat. The act of floating is the act of letting go of all the grudges and negativity so that one can start life anew. This festival is also for honoring the water goddess known as Pra Mae Kongka and to give thanks to the water which gives and nourishes life. Back in 2011 when Thailand had to go through a major flood crisis, some people would go down to the river and ask Pra Mae Kongka for forgiveness in fear that the Thai people might have offended the goddess with their abuse of natural resources and polluting the river.

On Loi Krathong night, some people would dress up in traditional Thai costumes. It is believed that if a man and a woman participate in this event together, they will be soul mate to their next life.  Others believe that if they pray and float the krathong, they will find their soul mate in this life.

Since Loi Krathong happens to be on the same day as the Lanna (northern Thai) festival Yi Peng,  Thais across the country would celebrate Yi Peng as well. Yi Peng is a beautiful festival where thousands of “floating sky lanterns” are lit and let ascend into the night sky. These lanterns are made from thin rice paper attached with a candle that creates hot air and propel the lantern into the sky just like a hot air balloon. The floating of the lantern is a symbol of making merits.
